Wit and Wisdom

Many entries in this book are my creations; others are gleanings and adaptations from several languages and cultures. All resonate to my experience.

Aphorisms, witticisms, moral tales, and similar insights are akin to philosophy but with two main differences: first, whereas philosophy reaches a point after lengthy preliminaries, aphorisms and their relatives begin with the point and its immediate human application. Second, whereas philosophy narrate in a major key, these entries play on several registers: humor, irony, paradox, and moral insights that modulate the melody of human life.

According to one of the aphorisms in this book, some of our ideas fare better in other minds. These have served me well as instruction and consolation. Now I release them in the hope that other minds will make even better use of them.

Christine Barrington misses Kobe, Japan. That’s why her garden is the style of the Japanese gardens she grew up with, and maintains her Japanese language by cajoling her best friend Carole, a Japanese American, to practice with her. She paints to ease the pain of the death of her parents and the loss of her childhood friend in Kobe. She longs to paint a portrait of the striking young man who parks her car and sells flowers to her. Above all, she wants desperately to befriend the IRS agent sent to audit her, a handsome nihonjin from Hawaii who reminds her of her first love, Shoichi.

The Lawrence County Moonshine War

This is a tale of a changeling shortly after these powers were bestowed upon him. Jack, who began life as a rabbit, fell asleep in arid West Texas shortly after wishing he had a home someplace else in a more temperate climate. When he awoke, he was a young man in a forest glen in such a place. He got exactly what he wished for! The problem was, he was wearing an Army uniform and he did not know his location. He didn’t even know which century it was! Jack was suffering from a serious case of amnesia.

He soon learned that the year was 1920 and that he had been slumbering on his own property in Eastern Kentucky. He was re-introduced to his cousin, Gerard, whom he did not recognize, yet with whom he had maintained a best-friend relationship since childhood. Gerard also introduced Jack into his moonshine business during these, the early days of Prohibition. Before long, Jack found himself situated between big city gangsters and state investigators.

Lead was flying in the hills of Eastern Kentucky and Jack was in the thick of it.

Author Earl Snort is the nom de plume of a retired law enforcement officer with more than forty years experience toting a badge and a gun.
